Switch!

Long time no write!

I just came back from the HFH Indonesia trip, and this Wednesday I will be flying to Mumbai for the Flat Classroom workshop. Last week I was building a house with bricks and a bucket of cement on my lap– this week I will be demolishing classrooms walls (not literally, of course!) with a macbook on my lap. Time to switch from physical-wall-builder-mode to virtual-wall-breaker-mode! :P

From a Flat Classroom to a Flat World

I’m back from the Flat Classroom Workshop that was in Hong Kong last week. Now  it’s time to return to the endless cycle of homeworks, projects, and tests (sigh). :P But before that, let me tell you about Flat Classroom.

We attended helpful lectures about how to utilize web 2.0 tools–Chatzy, Ning, Wikispaces, Skype, Ustream, Creative Commons, TinyURL, etc– and how to prepare powerful presentations using multimedia.

Students and teachers were divided into teams to work on a project on the Digital Divide theme. Each team had to define the Digital Divide, create a solution to bridge the divide, and prepare a presentation. My team focused on the Digital Divide between the Analog Generation and the Digital Generation. We were truly in a “flat” classroom, since we worked with virtual participants from around the world.

It was a life-changing experience to connect, communicate, and cooperate with people from various cultures. I interacted with people I’ve never met before, and even spoke in front of a large audience; if you know how shy I am, you will understand how meaningful it was to me.

I think that the ultimate goal of Flat Classroom wasn’t to learn about technology, or to bridge the digital divide (although those were very, VERY important objectives!)– It was to Flatten the World.

I believe that when we broke down the walls of the classroom, a small crack was made on the walls of the world. Starting from flattening the classroom through technology, we shall flatten the whole world step by step.  I’m looking forward to the day I’ll be attending a “Flat World Conference.” :)

This blue phoenix image will be used as a background for PTV, the new TV show of the high school Advanced Journalism class. I heard that PTV will start broadcasting this school year.

I’m looking forward to PTV; as far as I know, it will be the first TV show of KIS. : )

탄천- The Tan River

The Tan River is a tributary to the Han River. The Tan River rises at Yong-In and runs through Seong-Nam, Song-Pa, and Kang-Nam. The Tan River is pretty close to our school. I like to go to the Tan River to ride my bicycle, take a walk, or just watch the wild birds.

The name of the Tan River – 탄천 (Charcoal River ) – originates from its interesting legend.

Once upon a time, there was a man named 동방삭 (DongBangSak 朔). He ate a special peach that he stole from a god, and lived for 180,000 years. He was nicknamed 삼천갑자 동방삭 (SamCheonGabJa DongBangSak 朔), since 삼천갑자 means 180,000 years. One day the 옥황상제 (OkHwangSangJe 帝) spotted DongBangSak near the river. OkHwangSangJe is also known as the Jade Emperor, the highest god of Taoism.

The Jade Emperor sent his messanger to the river to capture DongBangSak. The messanger started washing a piece of charcoal at the river, as the Jade Emperor demanded. DongBangSak saw this as he was passing by, and asked the messanger: “Why are you washing that piece of charcoal?” The messanger answered: “I am trying to make this black piece charcoal white by washing it.” DongBangSak laughed his head off and said: “I lived for 180,000 years, and I never saw an idiot like you, trying to wash charcoal to make it white!” The messanger noticed that the man was the DongBangSak he was looking for, and DongBangSak was brought before the Jade Emperor. After this event the river was named Tan River, the Charcoal River.

Director’s comment:

Every day: so many opportunities to connect…

What if you took just one?

This is one of my favorite short films on the internet.

The cinematography is astonishing, and the storytelling is fantastic.

I wanted to share this movie with the people who visit my blog because I like it so much.
